Peridotite

Peridotite is a coarse-grained intrusive igneous rock that is composed almost entirely of olivine. It may contain small amounts of amphibole, feldspar, quartz or pyroxene.

It is the major component of the mantle. Extrusive equivalents of peridotite are uncommon because ultramafic magmas rarely reach the surface before solidification.

Texture: phaneritic

Composition: ultramafic (extremely enriched in iron and magnesium)

Mineral Content: Mostly olivine with some pyroxene

Color:
green

Cooling Rate: slow, intrusive

Extrusive Equivalent:
rare Other Characteristics: green, olivine-rich composition and granular texture.
